Innovating Medical Education: A Glimpse into FMH Media Lab’s Technological Workshops
April 11, 2024Welcome to the Future of Health Education
In the ever-evolving landscape of medicine and healthcare, the integration of technology has become increasingly important. At the FMH Media Lab we recently had the privilege of hosting a series of workshops aimed at enriching the educational journey of 500 first year MEDS1001 students. Over the course of two weeks, these budding students delved into the realms of artificial intelligence (AI), 3D scanning, 3D printing, virtual reality (VR) surgical simulations, augmented reality (AR) learning simulations, and flatscreen anatomy experiences. Let's delve into the transformative experiences and insights gained during these immersive workshops.
AI Chatbots: Enhancing Communication Training in Healthcare
The workshops kicked off with an engaging exploration into the realm of AI chatbots, taking an innovative approach that extended beyond mere technicalities. Students were not only introduced to the fundamental concepts of AI and its potential applications in medicine and health but were also immersed in the creative process of character development for their chatbots. Under the guidance of seasoned experts, they delved into crafting intricate backstories for their AI characters, considering motivations, flaws, and distinctive dialogue styles. This holistic approach not only honed their technical skills but also instilled a deeper understanding of the nuanced human elements essential for effective communication in healthcare scenarios.
3D Technology: Bringing Medicine to Life
Next on the agenda was a deep dive into the world of 3D technology, encompassing scanning and printing. Through hands-on sessions, students learned the intricacies of 3D scanning techniques, allowing them to capture detailed anatomical structures with precision. Subsequently, they learnt about translating these scans into tangible models using cutting-edge 3D printing technology as well as exploring the dynamic realm 3D animation, including body rigging. Witnessing digital designs materialize into physical prototypes was not only gratifying but also underscored the immense potential of 3D technology in medical education and practice.
Immersive Surgery: Navigating the OR in VR
One of the highlights of the workshops was the immersive VR surgical simulations. Equipped with state-of-the-art VR headsets, students stepped into virtual operating rooms, where they faced simulated surgical scenarios. These simulations provided a safe yet realistic environment for students to learn about a particular procedure, hone their skills and foster confidence in their abilities.
Augmented Reality: A New Lens on Anatomy
In addition to VR, students were introduced to the educational possibilities offered by augmented reality. Through AR learning simulations, they engaged with interactive digital overlays superimposed onto real-world environments. Exploring anatomical structures in depth facilitated by AR technology immersive learning experiences supplementing traditional classroom settings. By leveraging AR, students can gain a deeper understanding of anatomical complexities and spatial relationships, paving the way for more effective learning outcomes.
Flatscreen Anatomy: Supplementing Traditional Learning
Rounding off the workshops were flatscreen anatomy experiences, providing students with yet another dimension of immersive learning. Utilizing high-resolution displays, students explored the anatomical planes by manipulating a computer-generated skeleton through anatomical movements. These flatscreen experiences served as invaluable supplements to traditional anatomy lectures, aiding these students on their journey of a holistic understanding of human anatomy.
Wrapping Up: Reflecting on the Journey
The culmination of these workshops signifies a pivotal moment in the integration of technology within medical education. By exposing first-year MEDS1001 students to cutting-edge tools and techniques, we empower them to become adept at leveraging technology for the betterment of healthcare. As they embark on their journey towards becoming proficient professionals, the insights gleaned from these workshops will undoubtedly serve as a cornerstone for their future endeavours. Through continued innovation and collaboration, we remain steadfast in our commitment to revolutionizing medical education and shaping the healthcare leaders of tomorrow.
